TW: Reflection on shoot 2

On Saturday the 7th of November, we utilised the entire day to begin filming the bulk of our music video, using locations like my house in order to re-film shots we were unhappy with following Thursdays shoot and hoping to use the Grosvenor Park location for scenes which fit in the middle section of the song.

What was your role during the shoot?
  • Again similar to Thursdays shoot, my main role was the filming process. I shot all of the scenes we captured on this day using my camera and additional equipment to help me, including the camera tripod and steadicam which I used for various camera movements as well as some close-up still shots.
  • I used the storyboards to help set up for each shot, instructing where the actors should be positioned in the camera frame and what they needed to do whilst I filmed. The storyboards helped me with quickly and accurately setting up for each shot from the correct angles and with appropriate, relatively slow movements that were needed.
Which shots were less successful or problematic? Why was this?
  • A shot which has repeatedly been problematic was the birds eye shot of the actor lying on the bed, this time it was not due to little space and the shot looking shaky, it was more due to elements of mise-en-scene which we did not think fitted effectively in the framing of the shot, this included some of the furniture in the room that we thought drew attention away from the actor and did not reflect his saddened mood.
  • We had also experimented with filming a scene of a flashback of the two brothers in the video, in which they were shown enjoying themselves whilst watching a programme on a large cinema screen. The lack of lighting of these shots were the main problem, often making it difficult to see the two characters faces and therefore understand what was actually happening in each shot. This meant a large amount of time was invested in trying to make this look right, and due to this only being an experimental scene, meant time management was affected.

What other challenges did you encounter and how did you respond to them?
  • We had a large challenge with the weather on this shoot, as we had initially prepared for filming for the bulk of this day outside in Grosvenor Park, but due to the rain which continued throughout the entire day we could not get these scenes filmed. To respond to this, we decided to film other scenes in the video we had not initially planned for this day, including various shots in my house; however this was made difficult as we had not brought the storyboards for these shots with us, making the process a lot longer as we had to remember every shot we wanted to film.

How did you develop your ideas for the digipak and advert on the shoot?
  • As we had planned to take various pictures for the digipak and advert in Grosvenor park and later due to the weather could not film here, we had to develop our ideas in my house. To do this we took photos of props and the protagonist which we believe to be in the style of the artist- Jack Garratt, whom often has digipak photos relating to his authenticity as an artist as well as appealing to a range of genres due to his independent music style which incorporates a mix of sub-genres and genres.
