On Thursday the 5th of November, we went to Harry's house to shoot the opening scenes of our video. Fundamentally, the shoot went well as we captured all the shots we had planned for in our storyboarding and animatic process as well as additional angles to some of these shots due to space restrictions.
What was your role during the shoot?
- For the bulk of this shoot, my role was to capture camera work and filming process, I did this using a range of equipment such as using the tripod to capture movements such as pans and zoom shots as well as using a steadicam to film shots that required actual camera movement such as the slow tracking shots. This included tracking past the character (George) whilst he laid in bed looking upset following the loss of his brother and filming him at a desk in the same room also struggling to cope.
- To do this I was also involved in the direction of George who is playing the protagonist in the video, telling him where to be positioned in the frame and what actions he should be doing in order to film the representation we want to show.
Which shots were less successful or problematic? Why was this?
- One of the most problematic shots to capture was the birds eye shot of George lying on the bed looking up (picture to the right), it proved problematic as it was difficult to keep the camera steady whilst standing above George looking down. This was mainly due to the fact that due to little space in the room we filmed in, the tripod could not be placed on the floor looking down, meaning I had to manually hold the camera making the shot shaky and below the quality we were expecting.
- Again due to the same spacing restrictions, we also found it problematic to film the shot in which George sits up on the side of the bed, this was problematic because the camera was initially meant to be placed in front of George at an eye line height but as there was no space to position the camera in front of George we had to alter this to a side angle shot which was not planned in our animatic.
- The main challenge we faced came after the filming process in the post-production process. After uploading our footage to Adobe Premiere Elements 9.0 we realised that due to restrictions with lighting in the room, many of the shots we had taken appeared fuzzy and the composition of these shots did not fit what we had imagined during planning.
How did you develop your ideas for the digipak and advert on the shoot?
- We had not planned on using any ideas from this shoot on the digipak or advert, instead seizing the opportunity to do this on Saturdays shoot as we had a range of locations in mind and a longer time scale in which to take these pictures.
Re-filming plans
- Because of the challenges we faced when starting to edit these scenes into the sequence, we have decided to re-shoot the same shots filmed in Harry's room but instead using my bedroom on the Saturday, we made these changes because it gives us flexibility to compare the two shoots on screen and pick which of the two we should use. My room also has more space for camera movement and various ways of altering the light to make each shot perfect, rather than relatively fuzzy and of a lower picture quality.
