- I learnt the effect of having an extremely frequent cutting rate in a music video by analysing 'Paradise' by Coldplay. The entire notion of the narrative is sped up, and the metaphor of the entire music video can be increased to a large scale narrative. This then allows the video to have a repeatability factor, meaning the audience can view the video and consume the overall image of the band multiple times, as the meaning is obscure.
- Most of the shots, i found to be medium longshots or midshots concentrating on the main character/artist. This adds to the overall image and consumption of the artist as they have on screen prevalence.
- The majority of the shots were taken at eye level which, again, emphasises the artist.
This is an example of one of the shots in the music video. This links in with Dyer's paradox of the star being both ordinary and extraordinary, as the artist is dressed in an elephant suit yet they are holding up a sign as though homeless in the London Underground- an uninspiring location.
This shot has many connotations that link to the overall narrative of the music video. For example, the location of the rail yard connotes freedom, and the ability to travel wherever. The entire narrative of the music video is based around travel and adventure, making this very relevant. Furthermore, it was taken from a bird's eye angle, which links to the theme of freedom.
This shot is interesting, and very conventional of music videos. The band are playing with an ambient sunset in the background, making it easy to consume as an audience.
Finally, this last shot of the band playing on stage immediately ends the narrative and turns into a reality. This also link well with Dyer's paradox of presence and absence, since the band appeared absent throughout the narrative side of the video yet they become present by ending the narrative and allowing us to see them as though live on stage playing.
Well done George, this is an excellent piece of work, You have analysed the video using technical language although more could have been added in terms of composition and selected a relevant video to analyse although you should include a comment under the title as to why you have chosen to analyse this video. 18/20
