HG- Brighton Reflection

Strengths:
  • A strength of our work in Brighton was our time management, we had previously planned a list of shots we would've liked to shoot, and we were able to incorporate all of them into our piece. The fact that our time management was effective gives us a lot of confidence going into our final piece, as it is arguably one of the most important factors when it comes to shooting.
  • Another positive factor we took from the trip was the amount of stylistic shots we were able to shoot. We decided to take shots in the lanes as we realised we would be able to improvise and construct some unique footage.
  • We were also extremely lucky with the weather. Fortunately for us, it was dry and therefore we as a group were not restricted in terms of shooting in external, outside locations which we had previously feared.
  • Another strength of our piece is the amount of diverse shots we compiled, for example we utilised a 360 pan as well as zoom-in and zoom-out shots, as we researched that in music videos the camera is moving throughout to create seemless continuity editing.
  • Another positive idea to take from the trip, was the relationship we constructed between the genre of music and our footage. We thought that the song 'Daffodils' by Mark Ronson would obtrusively intimate vibrancy, and colour. Therefore, we took several colourful shots, as well as artistic graffiti.
Weaknesses:

  • A potential weakness was the fact that we didn't take enough shots in interior locations. This may have been because we planned most of our shots outside, and we also discovered many interesting locations where we could incorporate many more stylistic shots.
  • Another weakness was that we did not follow a narrative style when filming. We decided to feature many different stylistic shots rather than creating a story, using montage editing, rather than continuity.
  • A few of our shots were a bit shaky as we were only permitted the track&dolly for a certain amount of time, therefore we had to make do without it at times.
Moving forward:

  • For our main piece, we now realise the importance of having a clear, detailed plan with an accurate shot list. Beforehand, we had a shot list but did not know exactly how many interior and exterior shots we needed.
  • For our main piece, we are going to follow a narrative style performance when filming as it is more conventional of music videos, and it will also look less 'jumbled' and messy than taking loads of random shots when it comes to editing.
  • Also, for the final video, we hope to have the track and dolly for a longer period of time, meaning that we can incorporate many tracking shots, without having any unwanted camera movement.
