GT-Comparison of two music videos

"I Got U"- Duke Dumont feat. Jax Jones

  • This song is categorised as deep house, and the video shows the conventional aspirations of the way in which youthful people live their lives.
  • Very little of Dyer's star theory can be recognised through this video however. The video is constructed more cinematically, and consists mostly of POV shots, so there are no meat shots to reveal the 'Star' in the video, but what the 'Star' sees. Despite this Dyer's theory in regards to hegemony, or culture, is clearly evident. Many shots below, for example, show a location of clubs, dancing and drinking, all common traits of youth. Furthermore, the foreign location is a desirable destination for many. This video will therefore attract a youthful audience as the images portrayed are conventional of youthful activities in particular. At the beginning of the video the star is shown to be no different than an individual with little fame or fortune, which again, is easily relatable with the audience. However the lack of fame and fortune goes against Dyer's star theory as there is no clear distinction between the main star of the music video and ourselves, in terms of wealth and lifestyle.
  • When positioning this music video with the theories of Andrew Goodwin, there is strong evidence revealing the notion of looking and overall voyeuristic treatment of the female body. This can be seen in the image below where the young woman makes eye contact with the camera. Voyeurism is only shown from one perspective in this music video-female voyeurism, supporting Goodwin's theory. Furthermore, there is often a succinct relationship between visuals and lyrics. For example when the lyrics "as long as i got you, baby" (chorus) are heard, there is often a shot of a man and woman together to follow.

"Blank Space"- Taylor Swift

  • The music video for "Blank Space", by Taylor Swift is in the genre of electropop, and conveys many of the characteristics of the star qualities evident in Dyer's theories. For example, the lavish lifestyle (big house, expensive clothing and jewellery) are all used to construct an image.  Dyer's paradox's are present in this video, evident through the fact theres an on screen relationship between Taylor Swift and another male character, which is easily relatable. This refers to the star being simultaneously ordinary, as well as extraordinary, visible through the lavish lifestyle, that very few of the target audience will possess.
  • When comparing this music video to "I Got U", there are obvious key similarities that both have in common. It is apparent that both follow the conventions proposed by Dyer in that the two music videos present a star image, and an extraordinary lifestyle to accompany the star qualities, such as the luxurious house, the expensive clothing, jewellery and holidays.

  1. good analysis and understanding shown of Dyer's theory. Revise the terminology of Goodwin as the relationship between the visuals and lyrics would be illustrative.
